Always Verify from ICMAI Before Any Attempt Decision: Exam pattern, passing marks, exemption rules, and paper structures are set by ICMAI and may be updated. This blog is based on ICMAI Syllabus 2022 and the CMA Prospectus as researched. Before registering for any examination or making attempt decisions, always verify from the current ICMAI CMA Prospectus and examination notifications at icmai.in.

Before preparing for CMA, every student should clearly understand the exam pattern, paper structure, and passing marks. Many students study hard but remain confused about paper-wise marks, aggregate requirements, group passing, and exemption rules. This confusion creates unnecessary anxiety during preparation and poor attempt planning at registration time. This blog explains all three levels — Foundation, Intermediate, and Final — in plain language, grounded in ICMAI's official Syllabus 2022 framework.

Quick Answer — CMA Passing Marks at a Glance

Foundation: Minimum 40% in each paper AND 50% aggregate (200/400). No exemption benefit in Foundation. Intermediate and Final: Minimum 40% in each paper of the group AND 50% aggregate of non-exempted papers in that group. Both groups must be cleared to pass the full level. Exemption (Intermediate and Final): Granted when 60%+ is scored in a paper despite failing the group. Specific conditions apply. Always verify from the current ICMAI CMA Prospectus at icmai.in before any attempt or registration decision.

01

CMA Exam Structure Under Syllabus 2022 — Overview

The CMA course under ICMAI Syllabus 2022 has three examination levels: Foundation, Intermediate, and Final. Students must pass each level (or be exempted from it under applicable rules) to progress to the next:

LevelNumber of PapersGroup StructureMarks per Paper
Foundation4 papersSingle group — all 4 papers together100 marks each (400 total)
Intermediate8 papers2 groups of 4 papers each100 marks each (400 per group)
Final8 papers (including 1 elective)2 groups of 4 papers each100 marks each (400 per group)

02

CMA Foundation — Papers and Exam Pattern

CMA Foundation is the entry-level examination. Under ICMAI Syllabus 2022, it comprises four papers, all examined together in a single group:

  • Paper 1: Fundamentals of Business Laws and Business Communication
  • Paper 2: Fundamentals of Financial and Cost Accounting
  • Paper 3: Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics
  • Paper 4: Fundamentals of Business Economics and Management

Key exam format features:

  • Each paper is 100 marks
  • Foundation is a single-sitting examination — all 4 papers are examined in the same exam session
  • Question type mix includes MCQs and descriptive questions; verify current pattern from ICMAI study materials and MQPs (icmai.in/ClntStudents/MQP_Foundation_DEC2025)

A note for Foundation students: Do not treat Foundation lightly because it covers four subjects. Foundation builds the conceptual base — accounting, economics, mathematics, and law — that all Intermediate and Final papers build on. Weak Foundation preparation creates compounding gaps at higher levels. For the complete study plan, read our blog on how to clear CMA Foundation in the first attempt.

03

CMA Intermediate — Papers and Exam Pattern

CMA Intermediate has 8 papers divided into 2 groups of 4 papers each. Under ICMAI Syllabus 2022:

Group I (4 papers):

  • Paper 5: Business Laws and Ethics
  • Paper 6: Financial Accounting
  • Paper 7: Direct and Indirect Taxation
  • Paper 8: Cost Accounting

Group II (4 papers):

  • Paper 9: Operations Management and Strategic Management
  • Paper 10: Corporate Accounting and Auditing
  • Paper 11: Financial Management and Business Data Analytics
  • Paper 12: Management Accounting

Key exam format features:

  • Each paper is 100 marks, written examination
  • Students may attempt both groups simultaneously or one group at a time
  • Passing is evaluated group by group — each group is independent for passing purposes
  • Verify current paper format (MCQ proportion, descriptive marks, optional questions) from ICMAI MQPs and study materials
04

CMA Final — Papers and Exam Pattern

CMA Final has 8 papers divided into 2 groups, with one elective paper in Group IV. Under ICMAI Syllabus 2022:

Group III (4 papers):

  • Paper 13: Corporate and Economic Laws
  • Paper 14: Strategic Financial Management
  • Paper 15: Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation
  • Paper 16: Strategic Cost Management

Group IV (4 papers — including 1 elective):

  • Paper 17: Cost and Management Audit
  • Paper 18: Corporate Financial Reporting
  • Paper 19: Indirect Tax Laws and Practice
  • Paper 20: Elective — one of: (a) Strategic Performance Management and Business Valuation, (b) Risk Management in Banking and Insurance, or (c) Entrepreneurship and Startup

Key exam format features:

  • Each paper is 100 marks, written examination
  • Paper 20 is an elective — select one option at the time of registration
  • Final-level subjects require application, case-based thinking, and integrated analysis
  • Verify current elective options, paper format, and any updates from ICMAI prospectus and MQPs (icmai.in/ClntStudents/MQP_Final_June2026)

Passing Marks — The 40% and 50% Rules Explained

Source: ICMAI CMA Prospectus / Syllabus 2022 — Always Verify Before Any Attempt Passing criteria described below are based on ICMAI Syllabus 2022 and the CMA Prospectus as researched. Before any registration or attempt decision, verify from the current ICMAI prospectus at icmai.in.

CMA Foundation — Passing Criteria:

  • Paper-wise minimum: At least 40 marks out of 100 in each of the 4 Foundation papers
  • Aggregate minimum: At least 50% of total Foundation marks (200 out of 400)
  • Both conditions must be met: A student who scores 200+ in aggregate but scores below 40 in any one paper has NOT passed Foundation. A student who scores 40+ in every paper but totals below 200 has also NOT passed Foundation.

CMA Intermediate — Passing Criteria (per group):

  • Paper-wise minimum: At least 40% marks in each paper of the group (40 out of 100 per paper)
  • Group aggregate minimum: At least 50% aggregate marks in the non-exempted papers of that group
  • Group independence: Each group is passed or failed independently. A student can pass Group I and fail Group II — and only need to re-attempt Group II in the next session
  • Full Intermediate pass: A student is declared passed in CMA Intermediate only after successfully passing both Group I and Group II

CMA Final — Passing Criteria (per group):

  • Same 40%/50% rule applies: At least 40% in each paper of the group AND 50% aggregate in non-exempted papers of that group
  • Group III and Group IV are independent: Same group-by-group passing structure as Intermediate
  • Full Final pass: Both Group III and Group IV must be passed to be declared passed in CMA Final

What this means for preparation strategy: Your target should not be just 40 in each paper — that is the minimum floor, not the goal. Prepare to score well above 40 in your strong subjects to build an aggregate buffer. A student who scores 55, 55, 55, and 35 fails the group despite having an aggregate of 50 — because 35 in one paper falls below the 40% threshold. The 40% floor in every paper must be cleared regardless of aggregate strength.

06

Exemption and Carry-Forward Rules

Exemption Rules: Always Verify from Current ICMAI Prospectus Exemption conditions, carry-forward timelines, and specific eligibility criteria are detailed in the ICMAI CMA Prospectus. The summary below is for general orientation. Before making any attempt decision based on exemption expectations, verify from the current prospectus at icmai.in.

Foundation — No exemption benefit:

According to the ICMAI CMA Prospectus, the exemption/carry-forward benefit is not available in the Foundation Examination. A Foundation student who fails must re-attempt all papers in the next eligible session — there is no carry-forward of any paper where they scored well.

Intermediate and Final — Exemption when 60% or more is scored:

Under ICMAI Syllabus 2022, a candidate who scores 60% or more marks in a specific paper but is unsuccessful in the group as a whole may be granted an exemption in that paper for future attempts. Specific conditions include:

  • The 60% threshold: The candidate must have scored at least 60 out of 100 in that specific paper to be eligible for exemption consideration
  • Exemption means: In the next eligible attempt(s), the exempted paper's marks are carried forward and do not need to be re-examined — the candidate appears only in the non-exempted papers of the group
  • Aggregate for passing still applies: The 50% aggregate requirement is applied to the non-exempted papers of the group in subsequent attempts
  • Time limit and conditions: Exemption benefits have specific validity periods and conditions. These must be verified from the current ICMAI prospectus — do not rely on older information or coaching-centre summaries that may reflect outdated rules
07

How to Plan Your CMA Attempts Strategically

Understanding the exam pattern and passing criteria enables smarter attempt planning. Here are the key strategic decisions at each level:

Foundation:

  • All 4 papers must be attempted together in a single session — there is no group-based split as in Intermediate/Final
  • Since no exemption is available, prepare all 4 papers to a safe level before appearing — appearing underprepared in any one paper risks failing the full Foundation
  • Focus on accuracy in Paper 3 (Mathematics and Statistics) — where students often lose the 40% floor unnecessarily

Intermediate:

  • Both groups simultaneously vs one group at a time: Attempting both groups simultaneously reduces the total time to complete Intermediate but requires stronger preparation quality across all 8 papers. Attempting one group at a time allows more focused preparation but extends the total timeline. Choose based on your actual preparation level — not peer pressure or what your coaching classmates are doing.
  • Plan for the 40% floor in every paper: Identify which papers are likely to be difficult for you and ensure they receive adequate preparation time — not just the papers where you feel comfortable.
  • Aim for buffers above 50% aggregate: If you score exactly 50% aggregate and barely 40% in each paper, you pass — but any small error can push you below the threshold. Aim for 55–60%+ aggregate to create a safety margin.

Final:

  • Choose elective wisely: Paper 20 elective choice should be based on your long-term career interests and your relative strength among the three options. Verify the current elective options and sample papers from ICMAI before registering.
  • Application-based preparation: Final papers require more case-based thinking and integrated analysis than Intermediate. Study time allocation should reflect this — more time per topic, more scenario-based practice.

ICMAI Official Resources to Verify Pattern and Rules

Before any exam registration or attempt decision, verify from these official ICMAI sources only — not from WhatsApp forwards, older blog posts, or coaching-centre handouts that may reflect outdated rules:

  • ICMAI CMA Prospectus / Syllabus 2022: The authoritative document for all exam rules, paper structure, passing criteria, exemption conditions, and eligibility. Available at icmai.in. Download the current version before each attempt session.
  • ICMAI Model Question Papers (MQPs): Available for Foundation, Intermediate, and Final. Intermediate MQPs: icmai.in/ClntStudents/MQP_Intermediate_June2026. Final MQPs: icmai.in/ClntStudents/MQP_Final_June2026. Foundation MQPs: icmai.in/ClntStudents/MQP_Foundation_DEC2025. These show the current question format, MCQ-to-descriptive ratio, optional question structure, and difficulty level.
  • ICMAI Suggested Answers: Available at icmai.in/ClntStudents/Suggested_Answers. Past exam suggested answers show expected approach, format, key points, and marking approach — helping you calibrate what examiners reward. ICMAI notes these are indicative and not exhaustive.
  • ICMAI Examination Notifications: Each exam session has a specific notification that may include any changes to paper structure, schedule, or rules for that session. Check icmai.in before registering for any specific term.
  • ICMAI Study Materials: Foundation: icmai.in/ClntStudents/Foundation_Study_Materials. Intermediate: icmai.in/ClntStudents/Intermediate_Study_Materials. Final: icmai.in/ClntStudents/Final_Study_Materials. Official study materials are the most reliable content source for exam preparation.
⚡ Key Takeaways
  • CMA exam structure under ICMAI Syllabus 2022: Foundation — 4 papers (single group, 100 marks each, 400 total); Intermediate — 8 papers in 2 groups of 4 (400 marks per group, each group passed independently); Final — 8 papers in 2 groups including 1 elective in Group IV (Paper 20 elective: Strategic Performance Management and Business Valuation / Risk Management in Banking and Insurance / Entrepreneurship and Startup). All levels use 100-mark papers. Always verify current paper titles, group composition, and elective options from the ICMAI CMA Prospectus and MQPs at icmai.in before planning any attempt.
  • Passing criteria — the 40% and 50% rules: Foundation — at least 40 marks in each of the 4 papers AND at least 200/400 aggregate (50%); both conditions must be met simultaneously. Intermediate and Final — at least 40% in each paper of the group AND at least 50% aggregate of non-exempted papers in that group; each group is passed or failed independently; both groups must be passed to be declared passed at the full level. The 40% floor is the critical constraint — a student scoring 55, 55, 55, 35 fails the group despite a 50% aggregate because one paper falls below 40%. Aim for 55–60%+ aggregate buffer, not just the minimum.
  • Exemption rules: Foundation — no exemption or carry-forward benefit available; all 4 papers must be re-attempted if Foundation is failed. Intermediate and Final — exemption in a specific paper may be granted when 60%+ is scored in that paper despite failing the group as a whole; the exempted paper's marks carry forward to future attempts; the candidate appears only in non-exempted papers; the 50% aggregate requirement still applies to non-exempted papers in subsequent attempts; exemption has specific validity periods and conditions. Always verify current exemption rules from the ICMAI CMA Prospectus before making any attempt decision based on exemption expectations.
  • Strategic attempt planning: Foundation — all 4 papers attempted together (no split); no exemption means no safety net; prepare all 4 to a safe level before appearing; focus on the 40% floor in Paper 3 (Mathematics and Statistics). Intermediate — decide between both groups simultaneously (shorter timeline, requires quality across all 8 papers) vs one at a time (focused preparation, extended timeline) based on actual preparation level, not peer pressure. Final — choose Paper 20 elective based on long-term career interests and relative strength; Final requires application-based and case-based preparation, more time per topic and more scenario practice than Intermediate.
  • ICMAI official resources for verification: CMA Prospectus/Syllabus 2022 at icmai.in (authoritative for all rules, structure, passing criteria, exemption conditions, eligibility); ICMAI MQPs for Foundation (MQP_Foundation_DEC2025), Intermediate (MQP_Intermediate_June2026), and Final (MQP_Final_June2026) for current question format and difficulty; Suggested Answers at icmai.in/ClntStudents/Suggested_Answers for expected approach and format (ICMAI notes these are indicative and not exhaustive); Examination Notifications for each specific term; ICMAI Study Materials for Foundation, Intermediate, and Final. Never rely on WhatsApp forwards, older blog posts, or coaching-centre summaries that may reflect outdated rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the passing marks in CMA Foundation?

Minimum 40% in each of the 4 Foundation papers AND 50% aggregate of total Foundation marks (200 out of 400). Both conditions must be met. Verify from the current ICMAI CMA Prospectus at icmai.in before any attempt.

2. What are the passing marks in CMA Intermediate and Final?

Minimum 40% in each paper of the group AND 50% aggregate of non-exempted papers in that group. Evaluated per group. Both groups must be cleared to be declared passed at the full Intermediate or Final level. Verify from the current ICMAI CMA Prospectus.

3. Is exemption available in CMA Foundation?

No — according to the ICMAI CMA Prospectus, the exemption/carry-forward benefit is not available in the Foundation Examination. All 4 Foundation papers must be re-attempted if the student fails Foundation.

4. When is exemption available in CMA Intermediate or Final?

When 60% or more is scored in a specific paper despite failing the group as a whole. Specific conditions, validity periods, and carry-forward rules apply. Always verify from the current ICMAI CMA Prospectus before making any attempt decision based on exemption expectations.

5. Where can I verify the latest CMA exam pattern?

From official ICMAI sources: current CMA Prospectus/Syllabus 2022 (icmai.in), ICMAI MQPs (MQP_Intermediate_June2026, MQP_Final_June2026, MQP_Foundation_DEC2025), Suggested Answers (icmai.in/ClntStudents/Suggested_Answers), and examination notifications for the specific term. Do not rely on WhatsApp forwards or older blog posts.

6. Can I attempt CMA Intermediate both groups together or one at a time?

Both options are available. Students may attempt both Intermediate groups (Group I and Group II) simultaneously in the same examination session, or one group at a time in separate sessions. Attempting both simultaneously reduces the total time to complete Intermediate but requires strong preparation quality across all 8 papers. Attempting one group at a time allows more focused preparation but extends the total timeline. The decision should be based on your actual preparation level and available study time — not peer pressure or what classmates are doing. The same flexibility applies to CMA Final (Group III and Group IV). Verify current attempt options and registration requirements from ICMAI before registering.

Final Advice from Rohan Bhaiya

Understanding the CMA exam pattern gives you clarity in preparation. Understanding the passing marks gives you direction. Your target should never be just 40 in each paper — that is the floor. Prepare for a strong aggregate and safe scoring in every paper, so that no single weak paper creates a fail in an otherwise good attempt.

Always verify from ICMAI before making any attempt decision. Exemption rules, group structures, and elective options can change across sessions. The ICMAI CMA Prospectus and official examination notifications are the only authoritative sources — not WhatsApp groups, older blogs, or coaching-centre summaries. When you plan with official rules, your preparation becomes more confident and your attempts become more strategic.
